Materials that Make up a Wetsuit

Wetsuits are designed primarily to preserve your body heat and protect you from the cold, and if you are a water sports enthusiast, you may want to know what wetsuits are made of to guide you in choosing what is suitable for you. Wetsuits are usually made from pure Neoprene or a combination of Neoprene and butyl rubber. Neoprene is a waterproof, stretchable synthetic rubber invented back in the 1930s. With the evolving need for a more flexible and stronger wetsuit, other materials may also be used in different types of wetsuits like lycra, spandex or Merino wool.

The surface of the suit can be smooth, waterproofed rubber or skin, coated or laminated with nylon or polyester. The main material, Neoprene is designed to fit around the body to prevent cold water to penetrate, and different thickness of wetsuits are available depending how warm or the cold is the water.

Neoprene in wetsuits is usually classified depending on the quality. It can be the standard neoprene, super stretch neoprene or the super stretch water repellant neoprene. Wetsuits that have super stretch Neoprene are usually priced differently according to the percentage of that type of neoprene on it. If you are looking for a wetsuit for a specific water sport, it is good to check what wetsuits are made of before buying.

Wetsuits with 30% super stretch neoprene are usually less expensive. Super stretch neoprene is usually found in parts of the suit that require more flexibility like the shoulders, arms and the back. Thirty percent super stretch Neoprene is the usual requirement for surfing wetsuits but other more experienced and professional surfers prefer to have up to 100% super stretch Neoprene. It can be used for wakeboarding, recreational swimming and general water sports.

Some wetsuits have 60% super stretch neoprene. These are usually placed in important parts of the suit like the back, shoulders, arms and thighs. Wetsuits with 60% super stretch neoprene makes use of standard neoprene in other parts of the suit.

Wetsuits having 100 percent or pure super stretch neoprene are the most flexible types. They are also considered the lightest. With these characteristics, they are also a little expensive.

Wetsuits are usually zipped at the back or at the shoulders or chest. These allow the wearer ease of putting on or taking off the suit. Other more advanced wetsuits however are made very flexible that it does not require zippers.

What is in Wetsuits that Keep You Warm and Comfortable?

Wetsuits prevent you from suffering hypothermia when you want to play outdoors with your surfboard or wakeboard during cold days. You may want to choose wetsuits made for a specific water sport or you may want to choose one with an attractive design, but it also pays to know what are the materials that wetsuits are made of, so you will know what is suitable for your comfort.

An artificially made flexible rubber called Neoprene is the primary material in wetsuits. It was discovered in the 1930s and has been used in wetsuit manufacturing. In the present, Neoprene is combined with other materials to make wetsuits more comfortable and more flexible to meet the demands of water sports enthusiasts.

30 percent Super Stretch. A wetsuit that is 30% super stretch neoprene usually covers only the shoulders, the back and the arms, and this is usually less expensive. A surfing wetsuit usually requires at least 30% Super Stretch Neoprene. More experienced surfers however prefer suits with 60 or 100% Super Stretch neoprene. In a recreational swimming wetsuit, a standard neoprene or 30% stretch can do.

Wetsuits with 60% super stretch neoprene cost more than wetsuits having 30 percent neoprene. Super stretch neoprene is usually placed in the back area of the suit, the thighs and the shoulders and arms. Other parts of the wetsuit are made from standard neoprene.

100 percent Super Stretch. If the entire wetsuit is made from pure super stretch neoprene, it usually cost the highest, but will also give you the most flexible fit and weighs a little lighter than the two.

Most wetsuits have zippers for ease of getting into the suit. In some types of wetsuits, especially those that are very flexible, zippers are eliminated. This also eliminates the problem of cold water getting into the tiny openings in the zipper.
