Fundamental Snowboarding Ability Training For The Uncomfortable Types

Snowboarding is super-fun, but it takes balance, timing, and quite a lot of guts. Without a healthy disregard for your own personal safety, no one would ever head down the slope. If you're an amateur or irresponsible, it is easy to get hurt. Here are some secrets to make your first experience more pleasant.

First, check a weather report. The best weather for first-timers is something close to a blizzard. This will give you smaller class sizes, and something soft to land on, (i.e. LOTS of snow). You will fall down a lot as you learn, so you definitely want a soft landing.

Don't go early in the season, and don't go late. Too early means not enough snow, and you will be landing on a 'mountain' with a decorative white cover (Ouch!). Too late means that repeated thawing and refreezing has turned most of the snow to ice just below the surface, which is also not a happy landing. The best time to go is mid-season, late December through January, depending on weather conditions.

Don't rely on friends, significant others, or spouses to teach you. You will end up being frustrated by the fact that while they may be very proficient themselves, they have no idea how to teach.

It is not so easy, and you cannot figure it out on your own. You probably will hurt yourself if you attempt it, or run down unsuspecting children on the bunny slopes. Sharing the snow means that if you don't know what you're doing, stay in the lodge!

Try a lesson from a trained professional. The ski resorts have droves of instructors just itching to send you down the slopes on your first snowboarding adventure. You could sign up for a class, but you may find your fellow students are all six years old. If you can, take a private lesson. They're not much more expensive, and you get an instructor all to yourself. The more time you get with an instructor, the more likely you are to have fun and learn some actual skills.

When you take lessons, either on your own, or in a group, LISTEN to your instructor. Assume the teacher knows more than you and pay attention. Also try to put into practice what they tell you.

If following all the instructions to the letter doesn't send you down a few slopes without falling, ask for a refund or a re-do. The ski resort has a lot invested, so they want you to succeed at your lesson and come back again and again for the season. They will try their best to accommodate you if you put your request in a reasonable manner.

If your ski trip will last for several days, then make sure you don't wear yourself out completely on the first day! Be modest to start so that you don't ruin the next few days.

Similarly, make sure you stretch plenty and don't do things that will cramp you up or affect your physical condition, such as drinking too much alcohol or eating too much (or too little for that matter).

Lastly, in the event that you do have an accident while skiing, be smart and invest in a "Winter Sports Coverage" insurance package before leaving home. Though hopefully it won't be needed, the potential cost of medical bills will be much greater than the small investment in such an insurance deal. Be smart and take this precaution.
