Selecting a Resort

For the novice skier, it is advised to select a ski vacation in a location that is suitable to all levels of expertise: That way all members of your group, no matter their level, can make the most out of the vacation. Most destinations do offer various ski runs, ranging from wide, smooth beginner's runs, to expert courses, which can be to be complicated and a little dangerous.

Novice skiers should invest in ski lessons from ski tutors at the holiday resort. Ideally, the new skier should take lessons prior to the vacation to learn the basics. A beginner should hire their ski equipment because purchasing it before knowing what one requires from the equipment may be a costly mistake.

What to Take with you

Beginner skiers often underestimate how essential proper ski clothing is: An average jacket and mitts are not going to be appropriate. Gloves should be waterproof with a grip, jackets lightweight and wind-resistant and trousers ("salopettes") designed for the needs of skiers.

In addition, skiers should purchase thick socks, a warm hat and scarf, sunglasses (the glare off the snow can be strong) and sunblock (it is easy to get sun burnt). For the best comfort and safety, a new skier should wear thin layers that allow for movement, rather than one extremely thick layer. Many ski resorts stores accommodate ski-clothing rentals.

Lift Passes

A lift pass is needed to give access to the ski slopes. They can be purchased as part of a vacation package or purchased in resort each day (though you may experience long lines at popular resorts). Costs are dependent on where you are, but many deals can be found by looking on the internet, asking the hotel concierge, purchasing in advance or buying for a group.

Always know what time the last lift leaves the slopes each day and organize a meeting point and time with your friends. It is also an excellent idea to carry a mobile phone with you for any issues.

Everything You Need to Know about a Fun Ski Trip

Skiing is not one of those easy-to-access sports which you simply stroll outside to practice--it is quite a bit more intense than just that! If it has been some time since you last did any skiing, or if you are going to be riding along side others that have little to no experience in the sport, then it is more than advisable that you join in an instructor's course or two before taking the plunge on the real trails. Also, be sure to find out about what the snow conditions are out on the trails, as this will influence just what kind of skiing techniques you will have to employ.

That?s a big question in and of itself: techniques. It?s not the same to be skiing down a fresh, ungroomed powder course as it is to hit a patch of ice or a stretch of man-made snow. Ask employees of the resort what sorts of conditions are present at the time, and make sure to adapt yourself to what is out there on the slopes.

If your ski trip will last for several days, then make sure you don't wear yourself out completely on the first day! You will not appreciate just how taxing the sport is when you finish your first day, but the following morning will deliver the message loud and clear. Be modest to start so that you don't ruin the next few days.

Similarly, make sure you stretch plenty and don't do things that will cramp you up or affect your physical condition, such as drinking too much alcohol or eating too much (or too little for that matter).

Lastly, in the event that you do have an accident while skiing, be smart and invest in a "Winter Sports Coverage" insurance package before leaving home. Though hopefully it won't be needed, the potential cost of medical bills will be much greater than the small investment in such an insurance deal. Be smart and take this precaution.
